Young people help design campaign to reduce smoking in public spaces
For five weeks at the GYG Arts Club, a group of talented young people from Gravesham did more than just talk—they picked up pens, brushes, and digital tools to change the world around them.
Creativity with a Purpose
Working alongside professional artist and celebrated illustrator Lele Saa, the group created a campaign to help reduce smoking and vaping in our local public spaces.
These weren't just standard art classes. The sessions were a deep dive into the world of professional design. The young creators:
Researched various design styles and public information messaging.
Analyzed the power of slogans and how to make a message "stick."
Explored the psychology of color and typography to ensure their designs were bright, bold, and impossible to miss.
More Than Just Art
As they sketched out illustrations and developed design ideas, the group engaged in lively, honest discussions.
They spoke passionately about clean air and shared how they feel when adults smoke or vape around them in our parks and town centre.
The young people highlighted the impact of pollution, connecting their art to the bigger picture of protecting our planet.
Bringing the Vision to Life
As an experienced creator of her own book series, Lele Saa was the perfect mentor to bridge the gap between a raw idea and a finished campaign.
She worked closely with the students, collecting their unique insights and helping them refine their technical skills.
The final campaign designs reflect the group’s aims: they are vibrant, respectful, and—most importantly—created by young people, for the community.
