Sport Relief 2016
On Sunday 20th March 2016, 21 young people took part in the volunteering as marshals for the Gravesham sport relief event at Gravesend Gordon promenade which was coordinated by the Grand Healthy Living Centre. 14 of the the 21 young people that volunteered previously took part in a first aid course to qualify to be first aid marshals on the day which also enabled them to gain experience in event coordination.
Gravesham Youth Council members also came along to support the event as marshals and one of which was the DJ. The young people turned up before the event started to help set up the course, setting up barriers, putting up gazebos and learning their role as a marshal. All the marshals had walked the 1 mile course before the event to ensure all safety aspect were in place and so that they knew the route and could help the runners better. The marshals were spread out around the course to help direct and cheer on the people taking part whether it being 1, 3 or 6 miles the young people continued to support them throughout the course, cheering them on and helping encourage them when the course got tough; some of the marshals even ran alongside some of the younger participants who needed that little extra encouragement. With 150 people crossing the finish line the young people marshals did an amazing job encouraging and supporting all the participants who took part.
